Psychoulis Alexandros

He was born in Volos in 1966. First he studied graphics at the Athens Technological Educational Institute (1984-86) and then painting and printmaking at the Athens School of Fine Arts under P. Tetsis and T. Exarchopoulos (1986-1993). His first solo exhibition with printmaking works was held in 1991 (Loulaki Gallery, Hydra). Between 1993 and 1994 he was a guest artist at the Research Foundation for Arts & Sciences (K.E.T.E.), established by the Greek sculptor Takis.
Spatial installations are pivotal in his oeuvre, often functioning interactively, engaging the active role of the viewer. The extensive use of digital media and modern technology (computer graphics, animation, video), the constructions of various materials and an idiosyncratic painting style (i.e. with the aid of robotic technology) are the key features of his work. The artist has invented an entirely personal style that demonstrates a broad perception of reality in a deconstructive vein, with allusions to autobiographical experiences and contemporary social phenomena as well.
He has managed art events, has designed brochures and posters, and has edited and illustrated magazines (Klik, Epsilon, Symbol, 01, et al). He has repeatedly collaborated with theatrical and dancing groups on stage design and graphic animations for shows and performances. He has also created a comic series. He was a member of the art group ‘Radar’ (1994-1997, along with Kostas Ioannidis and George Giparakis). His play, I don’t believe in your eyes was presented in 2000 at the Neos Kosmos theatre.
He has held over 15 solo exhibitions and has participated in many group ones, in Greece and abroad. Among others, he has participated in the 5th and 6th Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean (Spain, 1990 and France-Italy, 1992 respectively) and has represented Greece in the 47th Venice Biennale (1997), where he was awarded the Benesse prize for his interactive work Black Box. In 2005 he participated in Art Athina Contemporary Art Fair with his project Waterfall, for which he was awarded the prize ‘Art Athina 2 EMST’.
Since 2000, he is associate professor at the School of Architecture and Engineering of the University of Thessaly.
